A container holding gold and other high-value items worth at least 20 million Canadian dollars (nearly $15 million US) was stolen from Toronto's Pearson Airport. Peel Regional Police Inspector Stephen Duivesteyn stated that the cargo was not exclusively gold and that it contained other valuable items. Although the authorities have given assurances that this did not give access to the airport itself or present any imminent danger to anyone at GTAA, their primary goal is to solve the theft.
According to Mr. Duivesteyn, after being unloaded from an airplane, the "high value" container was taken from a holding area facility. He also said that investigators were keeping their options open, with no specific identification of suspects, airline companies nor any updates on whether the goods had left Canada thus far. The Greater Toronto Airports Authority reported in a statement to CBS News that "This did not involve access to Toronto Pearson and did not pose a threat to passengers or GTAA staff."
How the incident occurred and the party responsible is of keen interest to many, particularly security agencies that are interested in preventing similar incidents from taking place in the future. This event has generated much attention, and it appears that the organizers might have performed significant preparation before implementing the plan to steal valuable possessions leaving airlines in the region worried about how these consignments will be protected going forward.
As of now, investigations into the heist are ongoing. With no news regarding potential suspects or where the gold could be located, the event remains shrouded in mystery. Gold heists are not something new as they occur regularly worldwide, costing barely anything to mastermind but enough to cause considerable economic problems for individuals and countries. Needless to say, several precautionary measures need to prevent such loss from taking place again in time. The total number of cargo thefts rose significantly over the past year, reportedly reaching one every hour globally, indicating that security regimes around valuable possessions need to be upgraded. The events that took place at Pearsons leaves many questions unanswered and only time will tell whether those investigations lead to any arrests or significant developments in the case.
